Merge and Manage Combined Technical Writing and Training Departments

LOCATION:

AGS Inc.

SITUATION:

With a Training Department located in New York city and a Documentation / Technical Writing Department located in New Jersey, AGS saw the opportunity to consolidate and optimize resources with all services located in NY.   In addition, an active documentation project had the risk of missing its fixed-price period of performace deadline.

ACTIVITY:

For a major telecommunication firm, two manuals for a commercial product were in a final-review mode, with significant content issues and only four weeks to complete the fixed-price activity.  One major rewrite with two review cycles were scheduled within the period of performance.  The client was satisfied with the final deliverables and the product was successfully released to market on time.

Simultaneously, criteria was identified for a cross-skill department, reviewing writing skills (based on types of documents),  document review skills, and stand-up trainer

skills based on active and prospective opportunities.  Invested in just-in-time printing/binding materials to reduce cost of producing in-classroom branded training materials.  Retained a staff of technical writers who would meet with AGS SMEs to develop and productize AGS-branded training materials in topics such as Business Process Reengineering and Software Functional Analysis.   Classes were offered to clients on a quarterly basis based on market need.  Documentation and training-material development services continued to be available to clients across the country.
