Teach Technical Principles to Non-Technical Employees
LOCATION:
AT&T Center for Systems Education (CSed)
SITUATION:
AT&T's committment to employee training included an organization implementing a wide variety of Instructional Design and Instructional Technology tools and techniques. When field individuals were being moved from non-technical to technical positions, courses were designed, developed, and tested within CSed prior to being implemented in a controlled training environment. An observation room provided the opportunity to observe teachers and students real-time; and evaluation criteria was provided to both students and teachers. Courses were then modified to improve the learning experience and achieve desired job-performace goals.
ACTIVITY:
A core tool across all course development was the use of "Plain English" and/or "Simple English" standard. All technical terms defined in a glossary included actual photos, vector images, or character illustrations to present concepts in a clear visual format. Training materials included Instructor Manual with notes, Student Guide, Job Aids, and Learning Assessment Questionnaire once employee went back into the work environment.

Used Bloom's Taxonomy to develop learning objectives (remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, creating). Communicated with work group supervisors to determine desired level and depth of learning to be taught, and desired work outcomes.
